Art and Design

At Audley Junior School we want Art and Design to be exciting, creative and fun. We aim for our children to develop positive attitudes to Art and Design, approaching their work with a positive Growth Mindset, a willingness to investigate and to solve problems.

Our curriculum encourages children to explore their creativity in a variety of ways, using sketchbooks to record ideas and to produce finished pieces for display. Children investigate a variety of medium and techniques, and are encouraged to make informed and creative choices as to their use. We also investigate existing artists from both past and present, and from different cultures, considering both method and purpose. Children are encouraged to express and justify their opinions.

Throughout Key Stage 2, children will:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences;
  • use sketch books to collect ideas, record observations; and to explore both new and revisited media, skills, techniques and ideas;
  • develop their proficiency in using a variety of skills, media and techniques;
  • be able to make informed, creative and innovative choices about the most appropriate medium and technique to use in order to complete an Art and Design project, including the use of mixed media where appropriate;
  • develop a reflective approach to their own work, being able to evaluate what has gone well, and what could be improved;
  • be able to evaluate and analyse the creative works of others;
  • explore the work of great artists, using their findings to influence their own work;
  • explore artistic styles from different cultures, using their findings to influence their own work;
  • be able to apply their Art and Design skills to other curriculum areas;
  • be able to use a range of subject-specific vocabulary accurately.

End Points

By the end Key Stage 2, our children will be able to:

  • explore their creativity and communicate their ideas confidently;
  • Understand the importance of a sketch book and use it as a vehicle to recount and develop their artistic journey;
  • to make informed, creative and innovative choices about the use of media and techniques;
  • approach to their own work reflectively, being able to evaluate what has gone well, and what could be improved;
  • evaluate and analyse the creative works of other artists from different time periods and cultures, and  be able to express and justify their opinions;
  • apply their Art and Design skills to other areas;
  • use a range of subject-specific vocabulary accurately.

Our Art and Design curriculum prepares children for the next stage of their learning, by developing curiosity, independence and confidence through meaningful and enjoyable hands-on experiences.
