Being a Historian at AJS

At Audley Junior School, our History curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity about the past and develop pupils' understanding of Britain and the wider world. Through the study of significant people, events and civilisations, children explore how the past has shaped the present, developing a secure chronological understanding and an appreciation of the diversity of human experience.

As young historians, pupils learn the importance of historical enquiry, asking questions, analysing evidence and thinking critically rather than accepting everything they see or read. By exploring the legacies of civilisations such as the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, children develop an understanding of continuity, change and the lasting impact of the past on modern society.

Learning is enriched through local history, educational visits, museums, visitors, artefact handling, drama and practical experiences, bringing history to life while fostering pride in Blackburn's heritage and an understanding of how the local area has changed over time. Cross-curricular links, collaborative learning and explicit vocabulary teaching further deepen historical understanding.

Our curriculum encourages children to develop a strong sense of identity, belonging and respect for different cultures and experiences. By the end of Year 6, we want our pupils to leave as curious, independent and reflective historians who understand the importance of learning from the past to help shape the future.
