French

At AJS, we really want our children to develop a love for learning a language.  Many of them are already bilingual and this gives them even more opportunities to learn something new.   Our aim is to develop pupils’ curiosity, confidence and enjoyment in learning a foreign language while fostering an appreciation of different cultures and communities around the world.

At AJS, French is taught across Key Stage 2 through engaging, interactive and progressive lessons that place a strong emphasis on oracy, pronunciation and communication. Pupils are encouraged to listen attentively, speak confidently, and gradually build their skills in reading and writing French through songs, games, role play, stories and conversational activities.

Through our MFL curriculum, we aim to:

  • develop a love of language learning,
  • build confidence in speaking and listening,
  • broaden pupils’ cultural understanding,
  • encourage curiosity about the wider world,
  • and prepare pupils for future language learning at Key Stage 3 and beyond.

Across the four years, pupils make progress in:

  • pronunciation and phonics;
  • vocabulary acquisition;
  • sentence construction;
  • grammatical understanding;
  • confidence and fluency;
  • and independence in communication.

By the end of KS2, pupils are able to communicate in French with growing confidence and accuracy while developing curiosity and appreciation for language and culture.
