Audley Junior School

Maths

At Audley Junior School, we are committed to delivering a high-quality mathematics education that provides a strong foundation for pupils’ academic progression. We recognise the vital importance of developing essential mathematical skills that not only support academic success but also enable children to confidently navigate everyday situations.

Our primary aim is to foster a love of mathematics by nurturing curiosity, enthusiasm and logical reasoning as pupils engage with new concepts. We prioritise fluency of arithmetic skills through regular and consistent practice across the whole school, ensuring that children develop confidence and mastery when working with numbers.

Oracy and the explicit teaching of mathematical vocabulary are at the heart of our mathematics curriculum. Pupils are given frequent and purposeful opportunities to articulate their thinking, explain their reasoning and engage in meaningful mathematical discussion. Through carefully structured talk, they are supported to speak like a mathematician, using precise and appropriate vocabulary to express ideas clearly, justify their thinking and deepen their understanding. Teachers model and reinforce key terminology, including Tier 2 and subject-specific vocabulary, ensuring that language development is embedded in every lesson. This strong focus on oracy not only secures conceptual understanding but also enhances pupils’ ability to solve problems with confidence and clarity.

We provide a wide range of engaging and inclusive learning experiences to support different learning styles. These include collaborative activities, interactive resources, focused discussions and the use of manipulatives, ensuring that mathematics is both purposeful and enjoyable.

Problem-solving is interwoven throughout all aspects of learning, with rich and varied opportunities for pupils to apply their knowledge to real-world contexts. Through discussion and reasoning, pupils are encouraged to explore different strategies, think critically and explain their approaches using accurate mathematical language. Planning and resources consistently reflect the integration of oracy, enabling pupils to deepen their understanding and make meaningful connections across mathematical concepts.

It is our aim that pupils leave Audley Junior School as:

  • Fluent mathematicians, with secure recall of key facts and the ability to apply them accurately and efficiently
  • Confident problem solvers, able to apply their knowledge to a range of real-life and mathematical contexts
  • Skilled in mathematical reasoning, able to explain, justify and prove their thinking clearly using appropriate methods
  • Able to think logically and critically, exploring different strategies and approaches to solve problems
  • Secure in conceptual understanding, with the ability to move fluently between concrete, pictorial and abstract representations
  • Equipped with a strong mathematical vocabulary, enabling them to communicate ideas clearly and confidently
  • Resilient and independent learners, willing to take risks, learn from mistakes and persevere with challenging tasks
  • Able to apply mathematics across the curriculum and recognise its importance in everyday life
  • Engaged and enthusiastic learners, who show curiosity and enjoyment in mathematics
