Design and Technology

At Audley Junior School, we want Design and Technology to be exciting, practical and fun. We aim to inspire children to become creative thinkers and problem solvers who can design, make and evaluate products with confidence. Through engaging and purposeful projects, pupils develop the skills needed to take risks, explore ideas and learn from mistakes while enjoying the process of creating and innovating.

Our curriculum encourages children to use their imagination and apply knowledge from a range of subjects including science, maths, computing and art. Pupils learn how design impacts everyday life and are given opportunities to investigate, design, build and evaluate products for real purposes and audiences.

 Throughout KS2, children develop their understanding of:

  • designing purposeful and appealing products;
  • generating and communicating ideas through discussion, sketches and models;
  • selecting and using tools, equipment and materials safely;
  • understanding mechanisms, structures, textiles, food and electrical systems;
  • evaluating products and improving their work;
  • and understanding the work of designers, engineers, inventors and chefs.

We want our children to enjoy Design and Technology and see themselves as creative, capable learners who are willing to persevere, adapt and innovate.

End Points

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will be able to:

  • design purposeful products for specific users;
  • communicate ideas confidently using drawings, models and digital tools;
  • select and use appropriate materials and tools safely and accurately;
  • apply technical knowledge to create functional products;
  • evaluate and improve their own work and the work of others;
  • understand how Design and Technology shapes the wider world;
  • and demonstrate creativity, resilience and problem-solving skills through practical learning experiences.

Our Design and Technology curriculum prepares pupils for the next stage of learning by developing curiosity, independence and confidence through meaningful and enjoyable hands-on experiences.
